Two incumbents on the San Diego City Council are preparing for new terms... while two other seats are still up for grabs.
Kevin Faulconer and Tony Young easily defended their seats, each winning more than 60 per cent of the vote
In District Eight, the latest results suggest David Alvarez and Felipe Hueso will face a run off in November. Both are Democrats
In District Six, where Democrat Donna Frye will be termed out, Republican Lorie Zapf and Democrat Howard Wayne will square off this November.
Zapf told Republican supporters gathered at the Westgate Hotel that she's thrilled to have the support... especially as a political novice.
"It's my first time being a candidate,” she said, “so it’s a nice way to start. Obviously people are really responding to the message and I am thrilled to be the messenger."
The San Diego Republican Party threw its financial support behind Zapf in an effort to change the make -up of San Diego’s city council. Currently, six of the eight members are Democrats.
Wayne, a former State Assemblyman, told Democrats gathered at the W Hotel downtown that there's more work to do.
“We're going to have to go back and walk the precincts again,” Wayne said, “raise the money again and raise the issues again, but if we give this race the attention it deserves, I think in November, District 6 will remain in the democratic column.”
Wayne split the Democratic vote with Steve Hadley, Donna Frye's chief of Staff, who came in third.
Under the strong mayor form of government, a ninth council district will be created, but not until the city is redistricted, using data from the 2010 census.
