Library, Rec Center Hours Slashed In Mayor's Budget Proposal
Library hours in the city of San Diego could be slashed but fire service will be restored. Here’s an advanced look at Mayor Jerry Sander’s proposed budget.
Mayor Jerry Sanders will formally present his budget this afternoon.
His office said it will include reducing library hours from 36 to 18 hours a week. Branches will be open just two days a week and alternating Saturdays. Recreation centers will have their hours cut from 40 hours a week to 20.
But the mayor’s office said fire engine brownouts will be restored with four crews coming back into service on July 1 and the remaining four returning next January.
Sanders will also propose eliminating 20 sworn police positions and combining several city departments.
The mayor’s budget uses a combination of services cuts and one time fixes to close San Diego’s nearly $57 million deficit.
