Gov. Jerry Brown says he is struggling to find a tax proposal that can win the support of California voters next year.
The Democratic governor told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that he has not yet found a "clear path" for a tax initiative he believes could pass.
Earlier this year, he failed to persuade enough Republican lawmakers to support a plan to ask voters for an extension of temporary tax hikes. He then vowed to fight for more tax revenue through a ballot initiative.
Brown says public services ranging from education to law enforcement will continue to erode as Republican lawmakers block any tax and fee increases.
He says he is trying to figure out "when, how and what" a tax initiative would look like.
