The city will serve as the Successor Agency to oversee the unraveling of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency. The state abolished redevelopment agencies last summer. The Successor Agency will oversee the completion of projects already in the works. Some projects stretch years into the future, so the Successor Agency could be around for decades to come. Councilman Todd Gloria supported the move. But he said some form of redevelopment needs to be resurrected.
“We will continue our advocacy in Sacramento to try and find appropriate steps to go forward,” he said. “Because the work of economic development, of job creation, of affordable housing construction continues. That work is still necessary.”
The specifics of how the Successor Agency will work are still being determined. The state has said redevelopment agencies must be dissolved by February first.
