City Attorney Jan Goldsmith endorsed Councilman Carl DeMaio for mayor today, calling him someone who can take the city of San Diego "to the next step.''
DeMaio, who's facing Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, in a November runoff, has "incredible energy and thoughtfulness,'' Goldsmith told reporters.
"He's willing to roll up his sleeves and focus on the day-to-day management of the city,'' said Goldsmith, who did not offer any criticisms of Filner.
Goldsmith gave strong praise to outgoing Mayor Jerry Sanders, who "brought the city from its darkest moment to an opportunity to shine,'' and said DeMaio will take it to the next step.
DeMaio has also been willing to approach the city attorney for advice on legal limits to his ideas, and stays within those boundaries, Goldsmith said.
DeMaio said the city attorney's backing was a demonstration of a team approach he is taking, along with members of the City Council and community, to restore San Diego's quality of life.
