It looks like Democrat Todd Gloria will become the next San Diego City Council president. The official vote will take place Monday, but today, current Council President Tony Young told KPBS he would be supporting Gloria for the position.

The council members choose a president each year. Young’s vote gives Gloria the five he needs to secure the post. There had been speculation Young might vote for Republican Kevin Faulconer over Gloria. Faulconer is currently the President Pro-Tem, which is the position right below the president.

Young, a Democrat, has held the council presidency for the past two years. But he is resigning at the end of the month to take a position as CEO of the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Gloria told KPBS in a statement he's grateful for Young's support.

“It would be an honor to pursue his bipartisan agenda which has delivered demonstrable results," Gloria said. "I look forward to Monday’s vote and the opportunity to serve in this new role.”

The council president is an important position on the city council. He has the power to set the agenda and assign council members to committees. Aside from the new strong mayor, the council president is seen as one of the most powerful people at City Hall.
