San Diego Regional Chamber Of Commerce Extends Jerry Sanders' Contract

Jerry Sanders' contract as president and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce was extended through 2020, the chamber announced Thursday.

The former San Diego mayor and police chief's pact had been set to expire next year.

"Since I joined the chamber, our board and staff have been able to make real, positive change for the region's business community," Sanders said. "It's been gratifying work and I look forward to building on the progress we've made."

The chamber said his proactive approach to public policy and advocacy has yielded several successful initiatives against harmful business legislation.

Some of those include forcing the City Council to place a minimum wage increase on the ballot, and getting business-friendly candidates like Mayor Kevin Faulconer and council members Chris Cate and Lorie Zapf elected.

The chamber, which represents about 2,500 area businesses, said its political action committee has raised over $1 million as a result.

"Jerry has revitalized our organization, reestablishing its position as the leading voice of the business community," said John Reilly, chamber board chairman. "Through an emphasis on advocacy for policies and candidates who are good for business, Jerry and his team have unified the business community."
