Authorities are temporarily suspending visits to inmates in the San Diego County jail system because more than one-fifth of them have been exposed to swine flu.
Sheriff Bill Gore made the announcement Monday and said that deputies are segregating those inmates from the general population and treating them with Tamiflu.
More than 1,000 inmates have been exposed, as well as 350 deputies and jail staff.
Exposed inmates will also not be able to meet with their attorneys or attend court hearings until the threat passes.
Dr. Earl Goldstein, the jail medical director, says there are only two confirmed swine flu cases among inmates, but 56 are showing flu-like symptoms. Nineteen of the 350 exposed deputies or staffers are displaying symptoms.
It isn't known when visits will resume.
