Motorists heading to the Palm Springs area were warned today that one of the two freeways leading to the San Gorgonio Pass will remain closed all weekend for emergency overpass repair.
The Moreno Valley (60) Freeway is closed until early Monday morning midway between Riverside and Beaumont, as emergency repair is underway to save a bridge that was struck by an overheight truck in Moreno Valley.
The eastbound 60 is closed at the Moreno Beach Drive exit, and traffic is being routed off the freeway at the Moreno Beach Drive exit. Caltrans officials said traffic is being routed back on the freeway at the adjacent onramp, but the ramps are not configured for a direct connection, and traffic must make a tight turn in the detour.
Caltrans expects heavy traffic backups, and warned that eastbound traffic may be forced to exit the eastbound freeway and turn back to the west if the backups get severe.
Drivers from San Diego were advised to use Route 215 and Interstate 10, and not Route 60, this weekend. Route 79 through Hemet to Palm Springs is not affected by the closure.
