A welding accident sparked a small fire Friday on a high-rise building under construction five blocks east of Horton Plaza.
The non-injury blaze at Broadway and Ninth Avenue erupted about 9:15 a.m., when embers fell from a 12-floor work area and ignited waterproofing material on the fifth floor, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Workers were able to get the flames largely under control without help.
"It was essentially extinguished before we got there," SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.
Since the damage was so minor, fire crews declined to tally an estimated monetary-loss figure, Swanson said.
