A woman was fatally struck by a southbound Coaster train in Del Mar early Thursday after she ignored the train operator's attempt to avoid a collision by sounding a horn, authorities said.
The woman was struck near the intersection of Coast Boulevard and 15th Street around 5:40 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Amber Reeves.
"The operator activated the emergency braking system but was unable to stop the train before striking the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene," Reeves said.
Her identity was not immediately known, according to the deputy.
