The Port of San Diego is warning drivers that a combination of factors could create traffic congestion along the downtown waterfront Saturday and Sunday.
Construction work to beautify the embarcadero, calls by two cruise ships and a visit by a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall to Tuna Harbor Park are expected to bring numerous visitors to downtown.
In addition, a huge block party for St. Patrick's Day is scheduled nearby in the Gaslamp Quarter. The event starts at 4 p.m. and is expected to attract up to 20,000 revelers.
The port says people heading into the area should leave early and be aware of recent changes to waterfront access points, due to construction of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan.
According to port officials, a temporary waterfront access plan to steer pedestrians and motorists away from construction activity was implemented March 4 and will continue until approximately May 5. The new plan includes a temporary crosswalk in front of Navy Pier and an altered entrance to Navy Pier.
