A stretch of Fourth Avenue in downtown San Diego remained closed Thursday and area trolley service was subject to delays as crews continued to work to repair a hole in the asphalt, possibly related to a nearby sewer line.

City officials closed Fourth Avenue between B Street and Broadway after the sinkhole was discovered near the intersection with C Street Wednesday afternoon, city Public Utilities Department spokesman Arian Collins said.

Westbound Orange and Blue line trolley service from the Fifth Avenue stop was also affected. A 15 to 20 minute delay was expected for trips through the downtown area, according to the Metropolitan Transit System.

The Orange line was ending at the Civic Center Station and the Blue line was terminating at the Fifth Avenue station. A shuttle was taking riders to and from the Civic Center and American Plaza stations.

MTS officials urged riders to allow extra time during Thursday morning's commute as single track and shuttle service remained in effect.
