Tom Fudge : Saving Fish from Drowning is the latest novel by Amy Tan. In it, 12 Americans from Northern California travel to Burma to “follow in the footsteps of Buddha,” as the tour is billed. But things start to go wrong even before the trip begins, as its organizer, a San Francisco socialite, is killed. Once the motley cast of well-heeled Bay Area liberals arrives in Burma, they commit numerous cultural gaffes. And during a Christmas Day boat trip on a remote lake, they all disappear.
Amy Tan is best known as the author of the Joy Luck Club . And her books tend to focus on female relationships among Asian Americans. In that sense, Saving Fish from Drowning is a departure for her.
