City to Leverage Purchasing Power to Stimulate Green Economy

The City of San Diego will use its significant purchasing power to help stimulate the market for recyclable and green products. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

The new citywide policy requires all departments to use environmental criteria when deciding what to buy.

Steve Grealy, the city’s recycling specialist, says San Diego has been using recycled paper for a while, but this policy will apply across the board to things like cleaning products or road surfacing slurry seal made out of recycled tires.

Grealy : So now we’re not just looking at low bid, although this program is designed to keep the cost the same, but it is also to look at biodegradability, to look at whether it’s compostable, recyclable -- has recycled content – it is low toxicity. So we’re looking at all of those things when we look at products and services now.

Grealy says the city spends millions on recycling, and their new purchasing policy will help close the recycling loop by creating a bigger market for recycled products.
