State Legislatve Leaders Close to Vote on Budget Deal
Monday, August 20, 2007
State legislative leaders say they are making progress on a budget deal. Senate Democratic Leader Don Perata says the two sides have reached agreement -- and there could be a vote as early as Monday night.
Perata: As far as I'm concerned there's a deal that ought to be done today, there should be no further delay. There's no reason to delay it further than there was to delay it this long.
However Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman is downplaying things.
Ackerman: We have resolved a number of issues but at this time there is no budget deal.
Both senate leaders say Gov. Schwarzenegger is promising to use his line-item veto power to make additional spending cuts.
Perata says Republicans have been assured that transportation projects funded by bonds won't be caught up in lawsuits over greenhouse gas emissions.
