California's Health Care System Negotiations Continue

Negotiations on a plan to reform California's healthcare system continue in Sacramento. The goal is to put a measure on the November ballot. Recent history suggests it would be a losing proposition. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

California voters have rejected the last five ballot initiatives that dealt with healthcare. Some believe a measure that seeks to reform the entire healthcare system would suffer a similar fate. But maybe not, says Anthony Wright, with the non-profit group Health Access. Wright says the last two healthcare measures got 49 and 48 percent of the vote respectively. And that was with the governor in opposition.

Wright: So if you believe that Governor Schwarzenegger has the influence of more than two percent of the electorate, you believe that if the governor was in support of this proposal, it would have a good shot of winning.

But for that to happen, negotiators must reach an agreement, and the legislature has to approve it. There's no sign that will happen anytime soon.
