Former UC San Diego Employee Arrested in Bomb Hoax

A former lab technician at the University of California San Diego was arrested Sunday in connection with a bomb threat against a research building on the La Jolla campus, authorities said.

A former lab technician at the University of California San Diego was arrested Sunday in connection with a bomb threat against a research building on the La Jolla campus, authorities said.

Timothy Bryon Kalka, 50, was taken into custody about 6 a.m. at his San Diego home, said FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth.

The threat was recorded when it was called in on Wednesday. All medical buildings on campus were evacuated until an investigation determined a suspicious device was not a bomb.

After media outlets played the tape Thursday, several people called the authorities saying they recognized Kalka's voice, Foxworth said.

Kalka had been fired from the university Nov. 30 but university officials declined to say why.

He was booked on a number of federal charges and was expected to appear in court Monday.
