Medicare's Open Enrollment Begins

It's open enrollment season for people on Medicare. And that means seniors who have one of the Medicare prescription drug plans have some decisions to make. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

It's open enrollment season for people on Medicare . And that means seniors who have one of the Medicare prescription drug plans have some decisions to make. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story. 

Medicare beneficiaries in California have 56 different drug plans to choose from. Plans vary in terms of deductibles, monthly premiums, and covered drugs. David Weil is with the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program. He says seniors need to do their homework.

Weil: If they are able to get online, go use the plan finder . They can plug in all their medications, and it will give them a list of the best plans in their area.

Weil says seniors can also refer to the Medicare handbook that was recently mailed to all beneficiaries. Or, they can call 1-800 MEDICARE for more information. The open enrollment period runs until December 31st.
