Two environmental groups want a judge to stop a weekend off-road vehicle event near the Salton Sea. The event drew 400 vehicles last year to the area just west of Salton City. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has the details. The Center for Biological Diversity and the Desert Protective Council want to prevent the off-road event from using sensitive desert parkland. Council member Terry Weiner says the groups want to prevent off-road use of the land until an environmental study is completed.

Weiner: The imminent harm to the area was bad enough when they were just allowing on-going use but to schedule a special event like this would really bring unbelievable, unnecessary destruction.

Weiner says the 4,000 acre site is home to rare wildlife, plants and Indian cultural sites.
