We're used to bad news about the lack of affordable housing units in San Diego. But we may have to get accustomed to more positive news. Lori Weisberg's lengthy investigation of the state of housing for low and moderate income persons in the downtown area turned up some surprising facts. The percentage of affordable housing units downtown has slid from 27 percent five years ago to 18 percent today -- still above the state requirement of 15 percent. But flat price conditions may be ripe for the construction of more affordable housing for low and moderate-income people in Centre City and nearby. Downtown officials have pledged to put $100 million into affordable housing -- more than $60 million more than the housing commission will allocate for next year.
