Parks Department Breaks Ground on New Cardiff Nature Center

San Diego County's Department of Parks and Recreation broke ground on a new nature center in Cardiff today. County leaders hope the center introduces people to the environment, and environmentally friendly construction techniques. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

The 5,600 square foot nature center will sit beside one of California's last remaining coastal wetlands. The San Elijo Lagoon, sandwiched between Solana Beach and Cardiff, is home to more than 700 species of plants and animals. The $5.6 million center will be built with recycled materials, plants on the roof, and recycled water.

Andy Mauro directs the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy .

Mauro : This particular structure here, not only does it introduce people to the nature that exists here in their community. But it also will hopefully open their eyes to more responsible building techniques that people can utilize in their own homes.

County parks officials say materials from the existing center will be reused to build other structures. The new center will be built with materials produced nearby to save on shipping costs and pollution.
