Rain Snarls Traffic; Mudslide Warning in Effect

The rain around San Diego County brought an increase in traffic accidents on freeways and surface streets. There's also concern of flash-flooding in areas scorched by last month's wildfires.

The rain around San Diego County brought an increase in traffic accidents on freeways and surface streets. There's also concern of flash-flooding in areas scorched by last month's wildfires.

The California Highway Patrol logged 97 incident reports between midnight and 9 a.m. this morning, no deaths and only minor injuries. On a typical non-rainy weekday, the CHP says it logs between 50-75 reports.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Poomacha and Rice burn areas in north central San Diego County. That was expected to last until noon.

Heavy rain is capable of producing significant mud and debris flows in those areas. Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Palomar mountain, Fallbrook and the Pauma Valley. Debris flows, including mud and rock slides, are expected with this storm. Mud slides and rock slides can potentially trap and kill people caught in their path.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall is also expected to cause flooding of small creeks and streams, country roads, as well as farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.
