Aguirre/Sanders Feud Further Tangles Soledad Landslide Conflict

The legal battles over who will pay the cost of the Mount Soledad landslide is complicated by the escalating feud between the mayor and the city attorney. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Mayor Jerry Sanders has released thousands of pages of documents related to the landslide on Mount Soledad. The five inch thick tome comes as the city attorney accuses the mayor of not telling the truth about the cause of the landslide.

Mayor Sanders says the documents are part of a thorough ongoing investigation.

Sanders : I have and will remain committed to keep an open mind and I would also ask the public not to reach premature conclusions about the causes of the land slide.

The city council has voted to hire outside legal attorneys to represent the city against suits being filed by residents whose homes were damaged in the landslide. They believe Aguirre has a conflict of interest, having assured homeowners he would get to the truth.

Aguirre disputes their authority.

Aguirre : They have no authority to hire outside council any more than I have authority to hire outside council residents or outside mayors -- I wish I could go forward with outside mayors but that would be against our charter.

Aguirre says he sees no conflict of interest in representing the city and its residents.
