Tijuana Vies to Make Largest Caesar Salad on Earth

Tijuana will try to set the world's record for the largest Caesar salad this Saturday. City officials hope the half ton of dressing will not only cover the lettuce, but also dress up the city's image. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

About 300 chefs and culinary students will help prepare the record-setting Caesar.

They'll combine more than two tons of Romaine, a half a ton of dressing and 130 pounds of crutons in a nearly 200 foot long bowl.

Tijuana city officials hope tossing the giant salad will help the city toss off its image as a haven for drug traffickers where kidnappings and murders continue out of control.

Jose Avelar translated for the President of Tijuana's Resaturant Association

Avelar : We know that the violence image that we have all around not only international but in Mexico has been there for many many years. So, we hope that we send this new image that we're working, that we're doing things really good for the city.

After Guiness officials judge the salad, it'll go on sale for three dollars a plate. Refills are free.
