Washington Elementary Adopts Students of Defunct Private School

Students of a defunct private school in downtown San Diego are now attending a nearby public school this year. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The private school kids went to the Harborside School which was forced to close down earlier this year due to financial problems. Washington Elementary, the only public school in that area, moved fast to take-in some of those students. They did that by adopting the private school's curriculum and some of its teachers, a highly unusual move for a public school to take.

District spokesman Rob Carona says it’s like having two schools under one roof.

Carona : Well I think the nice thing is they will be running into the teachers that they've had before, and they're familiar with the program. What's really new for them is knowing the administration, the office the other teachers and parents and the facility itself.

Washington Elementary's enrollment has steadily declined over the past few years. Officials hope the changes will bring back more families to the district.
