Alan Ray : College is expensive. According to the College Board, the average cost of attending a private university is $23,712. Attending a public university for a year costs an average of $6,185. Both are up more than 6 percent from last year. There's not much reason to think the cost of college will be going down anytime soon.

And, with the real estate bubble burst, and the credit crunch, getting loans for college isn't as easy as it once was.

But there is still hope.
