Registrar Up Against Deadline

Audio

Aired 4/19/09

San Diego's Registrar of Voters says if state legislators delay finalizing ballot measures beyond this week, they will jeopardize the timetable for getting information to voters. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

San Diego Registrar of Voters, Deborah Seiler, says she will have to start mailing out sample ballots to military and other overseas voters next week. That means she needs to have a complete list of ballot measures by this Thursday to meet the deadline.

San Diego’s propositions are finalized, but state legislators are still debating possible state ballot initiatives.

Seiler: For us, the addition of any text or any contest at this point means a complete redo to our ballot layout, so there’s a massive amount of work that has to occur within a very tight time frame .

Seiler says she will print about 2 million ballots, but they are not all the same. There are about 600 different ballot types for voters in San Diego County alone. All the information on them is translated into three languages other than English.

Currently  twelve statewide propositions have been finalized, but legislators are arguing over the language of several more that may yet be included on the ballot.
