San Onofre Nuclear Plant Undergoing Special Inspection

Officials say federal inspectors have begun a special check of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station following the failure of an emergency diesel generator during testing.

Officials say federal inspectors have begun a special check of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station following the failure of an emergency diesel generator during testing.

The generator is designed to supply electrical power to the plant's safety systems if there is a power outage. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it failed during a routine test last month, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said in a statement.

The plant is jointly owned by Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside. It provides enough power for about 2.75 million homes.

The agency says the problem has been fixed and was likely caused by an improperly installed electrical component in the generator.
