Local Woman Recounts Her Childhood Living in Nazi Germany

Tom Fudge: San Diegan Eleanor Ramrath Garner is the daughter of German immigrant parents. That may not be terribly unusual. But what's remarkable in her case is that early on, in the 1930s depression, she moved with her parents back to Germany.

Her father did it to find work. But if you know anything about history, you know that a move to Germany at that time spelled trouble. And that's what Eleanor and her family got after the Nazis seized power in 1933.

The bad news is the family was stuck in Berlin for WWII and all of the bombing and repression the Nazi era brought. The good news is the family survived. And Eleanor has written a book about her experience. It's called Eleanor's Story: An American Girl in Hitler's Germany .
