Cal State San Marcos students are gathering support to allow undocumented immigrants to get financial aid for college. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

A student rights group is gathering signatures and holding forums in support of The Dream Act. It is the state and federal bill that would clear the way for college aid to be handed down to thousands of illegal immigrants. The federal bill would also let them get permanent residency if they graduate.

Both bills have failed in the past to get final approval. But student Isamariceli Antonio believes a new president -- especially a democratic one -- might help to turn things around.   She says students like her desperately want a college education.

Antonio: We're here to make American better. We're the future. I mean, we're not here telling them give us money to buy booze. Give us some money so we can go to college.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruled undocumented immigrants have a right to education. However many of them can't afford to go to college.
