New School Superintendent Leads First Board Meeting

San Diego's new school superintendent Terry Grier officially leads his first school board meeting today. He says his top priority is to develop a better working relationship with school trustees. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Grier says he plans to be in constant communication with the five school board members by calling, emailing and having one-on-one meetings with them. He hopes together they can lead the district in a new direction. Former superintendent Carl Cohn was criticized for NOT being as open and collaborative. Grier says that will change.

Grier: They know that I have very strong opinions I'll express those opinions but at the end of the day I work for the board. Its not the other way around as it should not be.

The community is eager to see how Grier's leadership style will play out with this school board. While some hope to see a more harmonious relationship, others worry the new leader might just rubber-stamp the trustees reform plans for the district.
