S.D. Foster Teens May Have Guaranteed Spot at Cal State San Marcos

San Diego County foster teens who graduate high school next year may now have a guaranteed spot waiting for them at Cal State San Marcos. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.

San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency and Cal State San Marcos are working together to guarantee college admission for local foster teens. The partnership is the first of its kind in the county. Margo Fudge is with the child welfare services department. She says many gifted foster teens don't move on to college because there's no one at home to help them.

Fudge: They don't have the parental figures that other youth have to help point them in the right direction, to help them fill out financial aid applications. And so we want to take additional steps to make sure we're providing that support for foster youth and encouraging them to be able to fulfill their dreams of going on to college.

Fudge says university officials will develop individualized learning plans for each student. There's also an on-campus support network for the students if they need personal guidance.
