Carlsbad School Seeks Environmental Award

Students at a San Diego County High School are hoping to win a top prize for their environmental work.  And your vote could make a difference.  KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

This spring Social Justice students at La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad started a campaign on campus to encourage people to stop using plastic water bottles.

They asked people to switch to re-usable bottles to promote sustainability.

Along the way, the students made a couple of short videos and entered a contest open to all schools in North America.

Now La Costa Canyon High has been selected as one of the top 3 finalists out of 174 teams.

A public vote on a Web site decides who will take home the $50,000 prize package.

The web site is operated by Quantum Shift TV which calls itself a 21st Century storyteller that uses leading edge technology and citizen journalism to connect people.

The voting wraps up Friday.
