Election Night Gatherings

There are plenty of options for people looking for a congenial place to watch the election results come in. KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

Golden Hall in the Civic Concourse on C Street is traditionally “Election Central” in San Diego. But party faithful will each have their own venues within easy walking distance of Golden Hall, to celebrate or commiserate over the results.

The Republican Party and many of the more prominent Republican Party candidates will be based - as usual - in the Westgate Hotel on Broadway.

But San Diego Republican Chair Tony Krvaric says the party wont begin till the work is done.

Krvaric:  We’re asking all the republican volunteers to get out the vote until 8 o clock, and so hence our election night headquarters wont open until 9pm.

The first San Diego results will be released just after 8pm, when the polls close.

The Democrats will gather at 8pm at the House of Blues, near the Concourse.

Party Chair, Jess Durfee, says it’s a much bigger venue than San Diego Democrats have used for election night gatherings in the past.

Durfee: We’ve got capacity for a thousand. Barack Obama has mobilized a lot of young voters … one section is going to be the non -alcohol area where we’re going to be inviting those under twenty one.

At UCSD, where 4,000 new voters have registered this year, spokesman Barry Jacoby says an event is planned in the Great Hall.

Jacoby: We’re combining an old fashioned election night party with some substantive discussion about the meaning of election night , and how young people can get involved in the future. Of course there will be pizza pie available for everybody who attends.

The Registrar of Voters has increased the number of polling places at UCSD from thre to seven  to accommodate a wave of new registered voters on campus.
