After a long, bitter race for city attorney, neither candidate was ready to call it quits tonight, despite Jan Goldsmith's significant lead over incumbent Mike Aguirre.

Even before the first results came in, a tired-looking Aguirre said that he felt the city attorney's office had been bought by powerful interest groups. He also thanked the Democratic Party and the 2,000 people who put up yard signs.

Shortly after the first returns, Goldsmith seemed confident. But he says he's not ready to declare victory with only 18 percent of the vote in. He did, however, speak about his plans for rebuilding the city attorney's office into a law firm that would serve the city's interests.
