Volunteers To Test County Waters

A group of volunteers in San Diego County will be testing the waters along the beaches and other waterways next weekend. It's part of an effort to assess the health and quality of the water. KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The Blue Water Task Force is a joint effort by the Surfrider Foundation and San Diego Coastkeeper.

Testing ocean water and coastal estuaries helps determine whether bacteria or chemical pollution is affecting local waters.

Manase Mansur from Surfrider heads up the task force.

He says teams collect water samples and have fun at the same time.

Mansur:
You really get out there with the elements. You're there in the environment with a lot of birds and animals are at too - and fish - and get a real solid assessment of the state of the quality of the water.

Mansur says the samples are taken back to Coastkeeper labs for analysis.

The teams will be sampling water in various watersheds along the county's 75-mile coast next weekend.
