The city of San Diego’s Winter Shelter tent opens today (MONDAY). It is the one of a network of homeless shelters around the County scheduled to open in the next week.

The site on the corner of 16 th and Island has been paved, the sprung structure is up and today the shelter for homeless adults opens its doors.

Bob McElroy is with the Alpha Project which operates the shelter

  McElroy  : We’ve already registered 230 people. We’re full already.

McElroy says he hopes to cycle 40 or 50 of the first residents into other support systems in the next few weeks. He estimates the tent will serve a thousand people over the four months it is open.

He says the police homeless outreach team have told him they are seeing twice the number of people sleeping on the streets this year.

Studies show more than 4 thousand homeless live in San Diego city. There are only about 2 thousand shelter beds.

A shelter for homeless vets opens near Midway next Monday, plus a network for families.

In North County, the Alliance for Regional Solutions will open several shelters with a total of 240 beds next week. The Interfaith Council has already opened  temporary winter shelters.
