The holiday shopping season officially kicked off today, and many San Diegans were out looking for bargains. Retailers are hoping steep discounts will draw in the crowds, despite a drop in consumer spending. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

The signs in store windows at Escondido's Westfield Mall said it all. 25 percent off everything. Buy one, get one free.

Coleen Keaveny started shopping when doors opened at four in the morning. She had her arms filled with goods, but said she's actually cutting back.

Coleen Keaveny : This year, my boyfriend's going to school and I'm working three jobs, so, probably half or not even half of what I spent last year. So, I'm really trying to budget, and get a sale where I can.

The National Retail Federation predicts 128-million Americans will shop over the weekend. That's compared to 135-million last year.
