The financial state of the United States is not good. That's made clear by the dramatic bailout of the American credit industry that was passed by Congress last week. San Diego is part of that difficult economic picture, but our city has some of its own particular problems. Our challenge comes down to the issue of affordability. It wouldn't be so bad that San Diego is an expensive place to live if our wages were also high. But local wages fall so far behind the cost of living that San Diego is dead last in many surveys of affordability.
The mismatch between wages and expenses has many explanations. One is the sunshine tax. In order to live in a beautiful place, with beautiful weather, we pay more. But that's not the whole story. We're spending some time this fall talking about the high price of getting by in San Diego. We continue our conversation today as we're joined by Joanne Faryon and Marney Cox.
