Fire Burns in Camp Pendleton

A fire on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base has burned more than 1,000 acres.

Flames were first reported on a firing range in the southwest section of the base at 3:35 in the afternoon. The fire sent towering clouds of brown smoke into the sky, visible for miles around.

Five Camp Pendleton fire engines responded originally, but the flames spread and aerial resources from off base were called in.

Two Superscooper planes, two helicopters, two fixed wing aircraft and a fire attack aircraft were made available, but they were only able to drop their loads of fire retardant until it got dark.

After nightfall, 20 fire trucks were left to battle the blaze, 10 from Camp Pendleton, 10 from Cal Fire.

Camp Pendleton reported no structures were threatened, though the base’s golf course was evacuated. No injuries have been reported.

Flames spreading across the hillsides were clearly visible from Oceanside, but by 7:30 p.m. they were receding.
