San Diego County Fire Update

Two wildfires that began at Camp Pendleton have merged. Authorities have lifted an evacuation order for about 1,000 homes but say another 500 homes along the border of the Marine base remain vacated. The Marines say the Camp Pendleton fire has scorched more than 3,000 acres and is about 25 percent contained. The fires started yesterday on base training ranges.  CAL-FIRE's Roxanne Provaznik says local fire crews remain on alert.

Provaznik: We're looking at probably, I think about, 30 to 40 engines, probably 30 crews and so we do have a large amount of people, plus all the Cal Fire people.  Our days off have been canceled right now until we get everybody situated on the fires.

Another fire that flared up on Camp Pendleton next to interstate five, shut down the freeway for more than a hour today.  Heavy smoke drifting over the road prompted the closure.  That fire is out.

In San Diego a Brush fire scorched about six acres in Rancho Bernardo.  That fire was attacked fromt he air and the ground and was under control earlier this afternoon.

City of Oceanside: Updated Evacuation Notice

The evacuation notice for the City of Oceanside has been lifted with the following areas still closed with the exception to residents only:  Papagallo Neighborhood, Pilgrim Creek Estates, Morro Hills, Wilshire Road, and Sleeping Indian Road.  The backgate of Camp Pendleton from Vandegrift Boulevard will remain closed until further notice. It is anticipated that all closures will be lifted at 10:00 pm this evening unless otherwise advised.
