Center Director Glen Brandenburg says using solar also keeps carbon dioxide or CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

CO2 is a by-product of using fossil fuels and is linked to global warming.

Brandenburg: Our particular system will reduce 82,000 pounds of CO2 per year.

He says the system will produce more electricity than the center uses.

Brandenburg says the excess will feed back into the power grid and that excess power provides enough electricity for 3,000 homes a year.

The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is also getting a rebate of $129,000 from the California Center for Sustainable Energy's California Solar Initiative.

The rebate covers more than 30-percent of the project's cost.
