Santee Sues the County Over Las Colinas

The city of Santee has filed suit against the County of San Diego, in an attempt to block the expansion of the Las Colinas women’s jail.

The city of Santee has filed suit against the County of San Diego, in an attempt to block the expansion of the Las Colinas women’s jail.

The County has already made an agreement with the State of California to demolish the old jail and rebuild it, triple the size, with $100 million in state funds.

Santee councilman Jack Dale says the city already has a land fill next door, and two sewage tanks. He says the County should consider other locations to expand the jail.

Dale: County of San Diego, why are you so sure that this is the place that this expanded facility needs to go? San Diego County is a pretty big region and seems like we’re going to build it here because it’s been there before and because it’s the path of least resistance.

Dale says the land, which is in the center of Santee, is worth $85 million.

Santee Mayor Randy Voegel says the cost per bed of expanding the jail is so high that the County could buy each inmate a new home with the money.

The County favors the Santee site because it is centrally located.
