Dr. Henry Krous heads up the San Diego SIDS research project. He says it was long thought SIDS babies were totally healthy, and then all of a sudden just stopped breathing and died. But Krauss says research reveals that's not the case.

Dr. Henry Krous: Quite a high percentage of these babies have very subtle abnormalities in parts of their brain that are very important to normal sleep physiology, heart function, lung function.

Dr. Krous says parents can reduce the risk of SIDS by placing babies on their back to sleep. He says babies should also be placed on a firm sleep surface, like a safety-approved crib mattress.
