More than 28,000 students will attend UCSD this fall. But only one in 50 students is African American. Latinos make-up 12 percent.

Mae Brown is Vice Chancellor of Admissions. She says the university admits more black and Latino students than actually enroll. Brown says that's because minority students who are academically qualified have plenty of top universities to choose from.

Brown: We're competing with some of the top institutions for these very students. So our job is to continue to make sure those students who are coming to us from diverse backgrounds...that once they have an offer of admission, that (they know) this is a place for them.

But Brown says that could be a challenge when more than 40 percent of UCSD students are Asian and more than 30 percent are white.
