SD Unified's Central Office Is Put On Alert

San Diego Unified school officials say all of the district's central office managers might not have their same jobs next year as a result of the district's money problems. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

District officials say close to 400 central office managers might be reassigned to schools or demoted if enough veteran teachers take the district's early retirement deal.

The district is banking on that deal to plug a $146 million budget deficit.

Administrators would fill vacant teaching positions. Veteran teachers have until May 8th to notify the district if they're retiring early.

Jeanie Steeg represents school administrators. She says everything is hinging on the final tally.

“The retirements are obviously going to have an impact,” Steeg says. “(The retirements) will affect what moves will occur. So we're just kind of waiting. We have three weeks to wait to determine where the retirements will be.

The district needs more than 630 teachers to retire early to avoid deep cuts. San Diego Unified is one of a few districts in the county that has avoided teachers layoffs this year.
