SAN DIEGO A religious group in San Diego is offering gun owners a chance to turn over their weapons to the police department Monday with no questions asked. The group is offering a valuable incentive as well.
This is the second year the United African- American Ministerial Action Council has sponsored the gun exchange program. Gun owners will be given gift cards to local grocery stores for every operable weapon they turn over. There are $50 cards for hand guns and rifles and $100 cards for automatic weapons. Council President Pastor Ikenna Kokayi says he’s not expecting criminals or gang members to show up.
“But what happens when we have guns in our homes, our homes are often burglarized. And in that burglary, these guns are being discovered and they’re making their way into criminal type activities,” he says.
Kokayi says at the exchange the guns are taken by police officers and later destroyed. He says last year’s event collected about 300 weapons.
