Cal State Students Protest Fee Hikes, Campus Cuts

Dozens of California State University students are outside the chancellor's office to protest an emergency budget plan that would sharply increase student fees, shrink enrollment and furlough most employees.

CSU students from across California traveled to Long Beach for a meeting Tuesday by the CSU Board of Trustees.

The trustees are voting on a plan to address an unprecedented 20 percent reduction in funding from the state, which is struggling to close a $26 billion budget deficit.

Student fees would rise by 20 percent - on top of a 10-percent increase approved in May.

Most of its 47,000 employees would take furloughs two days per month and see their pay cut by about 10 percent.

Student enrollment would be cut about 10 percent over the next two years at its 23 campuses.
