City Council Committee Recommends Public Access Plan For Children's Pool

A plan to manage public access to the Children's Pool in La Jolla will move forward. A city council committee met Monday to outline a final proposal.

The city Natural Resources Committee discussed the ongoing debate at the Children's Pool. At issue is whether to limit the interaction between seals and humans.

After several hours, the committee unanimously voted to send a plan to the full city council. It will recommend four items including keeping a rope barrier up year-round, prohibiting dog access, restricting human activity during pupping season, and seeking private funding for a park ranger or lifeguard to patrol the Children's Pool.

There has been debate for years over whether seals should be allowed at an area originally designed for children. Councilwoman Sheri Lightner hopes the plan will ease tensions between those who want to protect the seals and others who want to use the area.
